The short version
Each ledger slot keeps one hero build and adventure state. The game remembers the last readable hero you played and saves before intentional switches.
These are not cloud saves. Clearing site storage, changing browser profiles, or moving to another device does not carry heroes over automatically.

Hero capacity comes from the same shared rule used by the live ledger.
Open the most recently played readable hero automatically.
Other heroes and shared storage stay unchanged.Pause the game and choose another ledger slot.
The current hero saves before leaving the run.Add a character while fewer than 4 ledger slots are occupied.
Existing heroes and shared storage remain available.Permanently remove only the selected hero after confirming.
Other heroes and the shared stash are not deleted.Progress is written during play and again before an intentional hero switch or menu exit.
If the newest copy cannot load, the ledger can recover that slot from a readable local backup.
A slot that still cannot be read stays identified instead of being silently overwritten.
If the remembered hero is unavailable, the ledger selects another readable local save.
